This very thorough assessment of the clothing worn by the
women on Parks and Recreation was a fun read. No, it’s highly doubtful that a tiny town government
employee wears $600 dresses. I don’t do too horribly, but cute $300 poly blend
blouses from Barneys (where are the boutiques in Pawnee?) that look like
they’re from Target or H&M to anyone without an eye for designers are not
in my budget. (Then again, I spent $400 on a meal last week in Chicago, so
priorities? Also, starting last month I managed to spend more than I earned and
am now dipping into my savings to pay rent, which is kind of atrocious and
baffling because I’m not extravagant, with the exception of that dinner,
obviously.) And it’s irrelevant because Vena Cava, Steven Alan, Band of
Outsiders, Opening Ceremony, Rag & Bone and so on don’t make clothing in my
size anyway.

The $19.99 beige and neon yellow polka dot Target dress that
I wore to my birthday party in July showed up on the finale of True Blood in a
super quick scene by an extra whose face isn’t shown. That seems more like a
realistic price point for the rural Louisiana setting. It’s a cheap see-through fabric where your underwear will show no matter what but a thong (which I wouldn’t wear anyway) would be too naked.

Skimmies

I found the solution later: Jockey® Skimmies® Short Length Slipshort. This is not shapewear, just a light flesh-ish-colored (only if you’re white, obviously) short-like undergarment that won’t give you lines. It functions as a slip for shorter skirts where a slip would seem dumb (and who wears slips anymore?). I’m not really sure who they are intended for, but based on the comments maybe larger women (despite coming in standard sizes) to prevent chafing, the modesty obessed and lady ranchers? I think the colored ones would be better if it was breezy and your dress blew up indoors for no reason like with the model being used to show the longer version, so bystanders wouldn’t confuse them for Spanx. These are the anti-Spanx and I kind of love them. I’m totally being an un-compensated brand advocate here. Free Skimmies?
