The latest in my quest to make my hair fall out by
2013 involves a Goldwell semi-permanent dye, Violet Ash, which ended up being
neither ashy, nor violet with its advertised blue tones, but a warm magenta
that's woefully dated. Dated to when is what I'm having trouble
pinpointing.
It reminds me of what you might achieve using
Sebastian Cellophanes or Clairol Jazzing in the '80s when color crayon shades
weren't the norm. I now have the equivalent of Jazzing in Cherry Cola over dark
brown hair, very 1987. Except that now where my hair is white it's noticeably
wine-ier. It did cover all of the grays, though. (I know it just looks like I
have a barely auburn brown but that’s just because the iPhone can't capture the
color properly. I took over 20 photos because I have priorities, obviously.)
I think some might associate this color more with
the '90s (I don't know if it's because the NW birthed grunge or what, but often
things I know were late '80s, others who grew up in different parts of the
country claim to be '90s. Or some just have poor memories–I went apeshit on a
friend, Oregonian, same age, a few years ago, when she said Jane's Addiction
was '90s when they had hits in '88, because, once again, priorities) My
So-Called Life era (I've never watched an episode in my life, it's just what I
think of) like something a grungey-or-gothy but good teen would do to their
hair that would be different but not radical. It's now a shade that's part of
any regular drug store line (Feria's Midnight Ruby or Chocolate Cherry, for
instance) and a shade that I avoid because in 2012 it seems somehow trashy (and
if you have this hair color, I'm sure look great and I'm not talking about you
at all not one bit) in the way that Arlene's brassy red hair on True Blood is
meant to convey something about her character.
Of course, this is all US-centric. The one day I spent in Bilbao last
year, I spied at least four women over 50 with short purple and magenta
hair. I have no idea what that means. Everyone of all ages in Spain also wears brightly colored eyeglasses.
I accidentally gave myself a similar hair color in
maybe 1997 using drug store dye and joked then that it looked like a
Cellophane. It was already dated. Until I figure out my next strategy, I will
claim it as retro.
