I’ve certainly never thought of
myself as “the wife” or even the more neutral “a wife,” but more than one
tenant (and the brokers) in the new condo have referred to me as James’ wife in
emails and verbally to him (not to me because I am a wife and live in the
shadows). It seems pettier and issues-having, however, to correct anyone, so
unless asked directly I will just go with it. I wouldn’t mind reaping the only
two benefits I see from becoming a wife, though: getting to throw a party with
good food and a big cake (which I could do anyway) and going on a honeymoon
(though, once again, I pretty much take an annual vacation of my choosing).
The ring? I don’t even wear jewelry. Green diamonds are cool, I guess.
