It seems unnecessarily cruel to single out one woman (and that's not really my intent) but in my why is Portland so Portland jag, sadly, she fits the bill. Certainly, it's horrible to lose your business and though I don't read voraciously as I used to (seriously, I finally finished 2666 last week and I'm fairly certain I started the thing around the dawn of 2009) I do appreciate independent bookstores. I went to goddamn library school, after all. But there's something particularly Portland and passive aggressive about panhandling out front our your former store and blaming Bush for your troubles. Personal responsibility? It's the looking for opportunities to be miserable and wanting to make sure that everyone around you is aware of your troubles that rubs. Expecting strangers to care is a lot to ask. I mean, this is my default state of being, but it must be resisted because it's grotesque. Or maybe I've just become uncharitable.

I like that she is sitting in the Lotus position…makes her look very focussed
and dumb.
dave: I also read that the store is now a pot pie shop. I wonder if they’re any good.
