I was never a big watcher of Too Close For Comfort, so it might not be surprising that I have absolutely no recollection of the infamous Monroe rape episode. Yes, that would be a young Jim J. Bullock abducted and raped by two large black women. On network TV. As comedy fodder. The ‘80s were a strange time.
But after being introduced to the possibility of such an episode existing, a whole other long-forgotten memory came back. One, that there was a short-lived daytime talk show called The Jim J. and Tammy Faye Show. Two, that I spoke with the show’s producer for over half an hour while he tried to convince me to show up as a surprise guest to be billed as Jim J. Bullock’s biggest fan. I barely even remember how this transpired. I think the producer had seen my zine, which clearly wasn’t about Jim J. Bullock, but must have mentioned him in some small way and figured I could shift my loyalty from Henry Thomas to Jim J. Bullock to be on TV. Except that I’m scared to death of being on camera and have a horrible onscreen presence.
And no, I did not make an appearance. The road not taken.
